William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, United Kingdom to John Shakespeare and Mary Arden. After being educated at Stratford Grammar School, Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway in 1582, and the couple had three children – Susanna (born 1583), and twins Hamnet and Judith (born 1585). In 1603, Shakespeare purchased the Blackfriars Gatehouse in London and began acting with the Lord Chamberlain’s Men theatre company; that same year he bought an adjoining house which became his primary residence until his death four years later.

William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England. He was born to John and Mary Arden; he had three older sisters: Joan, Margaret and Anne. His father belonged to a prominent family of wool merchants who rose to become town mayor and eventually fell into financial difficulties due to bad investments. When William was about 3 years old his mother, Mary died after giving birth to her last child. It is believed that she suffered from puerperal fever (childbed fever) caused by bacteria spread from childbirth. She passed away at age 36. The children were left with their 26 year old father until relatives took them over some time later.
